History of AmaMpondomse

Amampondomise people roughly constitute a population of more than 3 million who are based inQumbu, Tsolo, Mount Frere, Ngcobo, Maclear, Ntabankulu, Mount Fletcher, Maclear and many otherplaces. The nation has embraced people from other tribes such as amaBhaca, amaNgwane, amaHlubi, amaBhele, amaMpondo, abaThembu, amaXhosa and many other African indigenous people.

After 115 years amaMpondomise kingship was reinstated in 2019 and HM King Zwelozuko Matiwane, who is the grandson of the late King Mhlontlo resumed the throne as the King of Amampondomise. King mhlontlo (last monarch) was vindictively dethroned by the colonial government in 1904. This was subsequent to the gun war of 1880. King Mhlontlo refused to assist the colonial government from disarming the baSotho and amaHlubi warriors, instead he made alliance with them. The dispute ended with the killing of a Qumbu magistrate Mr Hamilton Hope in what was later referred as Hope war. King Mhlonto went into exile and stayed in Lesotho for many years. On his return he was arrested by the
colonial governments and subjected to a trial. Notwithstanding the fact that he was found not guilty, none the less he was vindictively removed as a king. King Mhlontlo is the last recognised king of Amampondomise who directly confronted the oppressive colonial government. He suffered from the hand of the colonialists. He was exiled and later made a prisoner. The nation celebrates king Mhlontlo for all his acts of bravery.
The kingdom has been working very hard to restore the dignity of the nation and assist communities under the kingdom
